Wilfie and Nell, a social experience in the West Village, New York
Filed under: Food and Drink, North America, United States, Nightlife
After hearing about Wilfie and Nell as being a great pickup bar as well as a great place to meet friendly people, my girlfriends and I decided to check it out and see if what we heard was true. On the website, the restaurant claims to not take reservations as to create the ambiance of an "informal gathering". Patrons are also encouraged to take a seat wherever there is room at a table, including at tables where people are already sitting. The bar is located in the West Village in New York City on a street full of cutesy bars and bistros, a quiet suburb inside a noisy city. Wooden tables are setup in close proximity to one another, allowing for easy conversation with strangers. While the menu isn't too extensive, you will be too busy socializing to care. The cheese plate is a perfect shareable dish, with assorted cheeses, toast breads, apple slices, and chutney. If you're on a budget, go for a draft beer for $6, your cheapest option. If you want something a little out of the ordinary and are willing to splurge, try their Spicy Margarita (make sure you get a water to go with it!).
Happy hour is the best time to arrive, as later on it tends to get extremely crowded. However, even when at full capacity the vibe of the bar never got too out of hand, somehow keeping its casual atmosphere. This is a place where you can come as you are, and while you will see men and women wearing suits and dresses, you will also see people in casual shorts and flip flops.
The verdict? We sat next to some really interesting people during dinner and had a great conversation about travel and the perks of living in the city. From there, we bounced around the room, mingling with not only guys but some ladies, as well. The people who are drawn to the place seem to be of the more friendly, social type. By the end of the night, it was easy to see why this place is known as the social experience of the West Village.
Located at 228 West 4th St. between 7th Ave. and West 10th St. Take the 1 or 2 subway to Christopher St.-Sheridan Sq.
Opening hours are Monday-Friday at 4PM, Saturday-Sunday at 12PM.

Getting high at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
Filed under: Festivals and Events, United States
New England may be the standard-bearer for fall travel, but New Mexico is an equally spectacular destination to spend the season. And perhaps there is no better way to usher in autumn than with necks craned skyward, under a dawn Albuquerque sky slowly filling up with several hundred illuminated hot air balloons.
Now in its 40th year, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta kicks off on October 1 for 9 days of events. The largest ballooning gathering in the world, and one of the largest events in the state, over 100,000 people attend to watch more than 700 balloons inflate, launch, and float over northern New Mexico. Many of these people happily set their alarms extra early in order to observe these vibrantly decorated balloons rise with the sun for the 5:30 a.m. mass ascent.
All of the week's events take place at a 365-acre, tailor-made balloon park in the north of Albuquerque, about 10 miles from the airport and city center. So the city makes a perfect base for exploring both the Fiesta and the region. And surprisingly, for an event that brings 100,000 visitors into the area, affordable hotel rooms are still readily available. The event's planners are also providing bus transportation from various points throughout the city, so thankfully there is no need to worry about driving through traffic or fighting for a parking spot.
For all you procrastinating gas balloon pilots out there, registration is unfortunately closed and you will have to wait until 2012. But for all you procrastinating spectators, tickets are still available. And who knows, instead of gazing up you may end up gazing down - it's not unheard of for pilots to offer friendly, curious tourists a lift.

The Best Big, Tall Tent Ever!
Imagine this ? 5 friends, a Durango and 9500 miles! A 37-day road trip! These five college kids are challenging themselves with this adventure in order to encourage people to ?Live Out Loud?. Find out more about their journey at www.thedurangodrifters.yolasite.com. Reading about this project made me wonder what kind of tent I would get if it were up to me. I do believe I discovered the ideal one. It?s the absolutely incredible 1 Axis & 3 Zulu 13 person combo family camping tent. This cool modular tent system is made up of a center section and 3 attachable pod tents. The middle tent is a free standing screen house that provides a huge living area. It is an amazing 24 feet long, 10 feet wide and ? get ready for it ? 9 feet tall. I love tall tents! This space is so big that you could even play Twister in it. Each of the three pods is a separate free standing 3 person tent that can be attached to the main tent or not depending on your needs. I think that, even though these kids are best friends, the importance of the sense of privacy that the pods offer will be paramount as the trip progresses. Picture this ? it?s been a long day on the road, you?ve just pull into the perfect spot at the Park, you assemble the tent(s), fire up the camp stove, have a great dinner and, as dusk approaches and the mosquitoes emerge, you can all pile in to the bug free zone of the screen house and relax, laughing, telling stories and sharing hopes and dreams of the future. Then imagine snuggling into your sleeping bag and drifting off to sleep while nature sings you a soft lullaby. Heaven ? it sure doesn?t get any better than this! Oh, I think I just talked myself into getting a 1 Axis & 3 Zulu 13 person combo family camping tent for myself! Can you picture yourself in one? Come and see the details here.

Galley Gossip: Flight attendant interview - The pros and cons of speaking a second language and how it affects reserve
Filed under: Airlines
Dear Heather, I am hoping to become a flight attendant soon (have a face to face interview next week!) and have a question about reserve status. I speak Japanese fluently and was wondering how different things are for flight attendants who speak a different language. Are they on reserve for the same amount of time? Is anything different? - NatashaFor the first time in history being a flight attendant is considered a profession, not just a job. Fewer flight attendants are quitting, turnover is not as high as it once was, and competition to become a flight attendant has gotten fierce. Ninety-six percent of people who apply to become a flight attendant do not get a call back. In December of 2010 Delta Airlines received more than 100,000 applications after announcing they had an opening for 1,000 flight attendants. Even though it is not a requirement to have a college degree, only the most qualified applicants are hired. Being able to speak a second language will greatly improve your chance!
The only thing that affects reserve status is company seniority (class hire date). Seniority is assigned by date of birth within each training class. This means the oldest classmate will become the most senior flight attendant in your class. Seniority is everything at an airline, and I mean everything! It determines whether you'll work holidays, weekends and when, if ever, you'll be off reserve. So it's important to accept the earliest training date offered.
While speaking another language doesn't affect how long you'll serve reserve, it will have an impact on your flying career.
PROS
1. MORE MONEY. "Speakers" earn more per hour than non-speakers. Unfortunately it's only a few dollars on top of what a regular flight attendant is paid. Remember most flight attendants make between fourteen to eighteen thousand a year the first year on the job, so every dollar counts.

Christmas 2010

Christmas 2010
It rained this year
Most years we take a "Rock" picture out on the rock in my parents back yard. This year it rained the whole weekend so a rock picture would have been rather wet. Always willing to shake things up, this year we stayed inside and used my mothers living room.Christmas
This year we had Christmas at my mothers house. Christmas doesn't make much sense to an eight month old so we tried to keep the shock and awe to a somewhat reasonable level. Of course she loved the packaging and paper way more than what they contained. (It takes Nara a while to warm to new toys).More...
