Oldest cave art in UK discovered and vandalized

cave artA design of a reindeer hidden in the back of a Welsh cave may be the oldest cave art in the UK, archaeologists say. Sadly, it's been vandalized.

Unlike the more familiar cave paintings of France and Spain, the reindeer is scratched into the rock instead of being painted, like this horse from the Scottish cave of East Weymss courtesy Europe a la Carte. No photo of the reindeer has been released for public use, but you can see it in this BBC video. Incised designs are common in Paleolithic art, but are less known to the general public because they're not as impressive as the giant paintings of caves like Lascaux and Altamira.

Archaeologists date the carving to about 12,500 years ago, a time when prehistoric hunter gatherers stalked reindeer and wholly mammoth across an Ice Age landscape.

It was discovered last September but its location kept a secret as the team studied it. Unfortunately, someone found out about the discovery and tried to scrape the carving away. Instead of it potentially becoming a tourist destination, now it will probably be gated over. Yet another example of one idiot ruining it for the rest of us.

Rear access helmet designed for easy, safe removal

The Voztec helmet has a detachable back section, for easy removal in the event of an accid...

Although motorcycle helmets save countless lives, they can pose a challenge to emergency response personnel at accident scenes – the helmet needs to be removed, yet the patient’s head should be moved as little as possible, in case there are any spinal cord injuries. While this sometimes results in the helmet having to be cut off, the prototype Voztec full-face helmet offers a simpler solution - with the release of one pin and two clips, the back of the helmet detaches and the front can be slid off... London day trip: Oxford

Oxford
London is one of the most popular destinations in Europe because of its eclectic shopping, crazy nightlife, and world-class museums and galleries. It can get a bit tiring and stressful, though. For those who want to get out of the Smoke and see a bit more of England, Oxford makes an easy and enjoyable day trip.

Getting there
The best way to get to Oxford from London is the Oxford Tube, which has regular bus service from various points in London up to four times an hour. There's train service from Paddington station too, although it's more expensive. There are also direct buses from Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

What to see
Oxford is famous for its university, one of the oldest in Europe. The Gothic and Victorian architecture of its more than two dozen colleges give Oxford much of its charm. Most are open to the public and feature beautiful quads with ivy-covered walls, and medieval chapels with stained glass and soaring roofs. Be sure to take a guided tour of the Bodleian Library, one of the largest in the world and home to some ornate medieval interiors. In the photo above courtesy Tejvanphotos, you can see the ornate Radcliffe Camera, one of the library buildings where I do research in the summer. If you see a guy in a Gadling t-shirt buried in a pile of books on medieval history, take him out for a pint.

Being a seat of learning, Oxford also has several good museums. Three of the best are the Pitt-Rivers for its ethnographic collection, the Ashmolean for its ancient artifacts, and the Museum of the History of Science. The River Thames passes through town and is locally called the Isis. There's a pleasant riverside walk you can do, or you can strike out on the water by going punting. The best way to get orientated to Oxford is to go on one of the many tours. There are regular walking tours, bicycle tours, charity fundraising tours run by Oxfam, and ghost tours.

Back-to-school backpack trends

Backpacks are making a comeback, according to Slate magazine. Simon Doonan, author and creative ambassador for the high-end department store Barneys New York, blames the trend on Twitter: As more and more teens and adults become obsessed with the constant stream of information on the popular social network, a smartphone now occupies the hand once tasked with carrying a purse or other supplies. Therefore, backpacks have become essential for carting necessities--especially those easy to slip on and off, such as the modestly-priced glazed croc bag by The Row (the design label of Full House twins: Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen), which retails at a mere $34,000.

James

My Sister adds a second...

28 Days Old (4 Weeks!)

Tiny Little Finger In Blue Sweater
It's amazing how much babies change in the first few weeks. James is already up to 10 pounds and has developed a very large bald spot on the front of his head. He still mostly sleeps, but there are brief periods of awake where he is looking around a little.

I find it difficult to image splitting time between two children, but I'm sure you figure out a way to make it work. We went out for a nice stroll around the neighborhood - the Williams household now has a double stroller (bassonet + upright) as well as an agressive single stoller. All three kids had a good time on their walk.

James Napping With Blue CapJames In Blue Cap AwakeOh Who Are You

And a bit of video. James and Marcus are almost two years apart. Can you spot the differences?

Thanks again for the visit!

15 Days Old - Our First Visit with James

We wanted to come over sooner, but our daughter was sick and it's not very nice to bring a sick kid over to another house where there is a new Baby. James Philip Vincent Williams was born on Sunday Feb. 13th. Marcus couldn't be happier!

Coolest Big BrotherLittle Smile Marcus

Marcus was running around and kind of scared us with how much further we need to go with child proofing our own home. James on the other hand was a surprise - mostly asleep and so light! It's amazing how light a newborn baby is compared to 10 month old.

James Little Smile 1James Little Smile 2James Little Smile 3

A little bit of sunlight and James woke up for a little bit of a visit. He's still in the mostly sleep stage so there wasn't a lot of awake and interacting.

James Super SeriousJames Yawning

Time to update the family portraits! Mom is doing really well after having the baby and Marcus is reacting well to a younger sibling.

Diana And JamesJames And Marcus
I was really impressed with how well Jeff and Diana could conceal there exhaustion. Just the idea of a second baby makes me want to take a nap.

The Williams Family

Thanks for the visit! Welcome to the family James!
