The Best Big, Tall Tent Ever!

Imagine this ? 5 friends, a Durango and 9500 miles! A 37-day road trip! These five college kids are challenging themselves with this adventure in order to encourage people to ?Live Out Loud?. Find out more about their journey at www.thedurangodrifters.yolasite.com.

Reading about this project made me wonder what kind of tent I would get if it were up to me. I do believe I discovered the ideal one. It?s the absolutely incredible
1 Axis & 3 Zulu 13 person combo family camping tent. This cool modular tent system is made up of a center section and 3 attachable pod tents. The middle tent is a free standing screen house that provides a huge living area. It is an amazing 24 feet long, 10 feet wide and ? get ready for it ? 9 feet tall. I love tall tents! This space is so big that you could even play Twister in it. Each of the three pods is a separate free standing 3 person tent that can be attached to the main tent or not depending on your needs. I think that, even though these kids are best friends, the importance of the sense of privacy that the pods offer will be paramount as the trip progresses. Picture this ? it?s been a long day on the road, you?ve just pull into the perfect spot at the Park, you assemble the tent(s), fire up the camp stove, have a great dinner and, as dusk approaches and the mosquitoes emerge, you can all pile in to the bug free zone of the screen house and relax, laughing, telling stories and sharing hopes and dreams of the future. Then imagine snuggling into your sleeping bag and drifting off to sleep while nature sings you a soft lullaby. Heaven ? it sure doesn?t get any better than this! Oh, I think I just talked myself into getting a 1 Axis & 3 Zulu 13 person combo family camping tent for myself! Can you picture yourself in one? Come and see the details here.

Galley Gossip: Flight attendant interview - The pros and cons of speaking a second language and how it affects reserve

Filed under:

Dear Heather, I am hoping to become a flight attendant soon (have a face to face interview next week!) and have a question about reserve status. I speak Japanese fluently and was wondering how different things are for flight attendants who speak a different language. Are they on reserve for the same amount of time? Is anything different? - Natasha

For the first time in history being a flight attendant is considered a profession, not just a job. Fewer flight attendants are quitting, turnover is not as high as it once was, and competition to become a flight attendant has gotten fierce. Ninety-six percent of people who apply to become a flight attendant do not get a call back. In December of 2010 Delta Airlines received more than 100,000 applications after announcing they had an opening for 1,000 flight attendants. Even though it is not a requirement to have a college degree, only the most qualified applicants are hired. Being able to speak a second language will greatly improve your chance!

The only thing that affects reserve status is company seniority (class hire date). Seniority is assigned by date of birth within each training class. This means the oldest classmate will become the most senior flight attendant in your class. Seniority is everything at an airline, and I mean everything! It determines whether you'll work holidays, weekends and when, if ever, you'll be off reserve. So it's important to accept the earliest training date offered.

While speaking another language doesn't affect how long you'll serve reserve, it will have an impact on your flying career.

PROS

1. MORE MONEY. "Speakers" earn more per hour than non-speakers. Unfortunately it's only a few dollars on top of what a regular flight attendant is paid. Remember most flight attendants make between fourteen to eighteen thousand a year the first year on the job, so every dollar counts.

Christmas 2010

Grandma And NaraMost years we take a "Rock" picture out on the rock in my parents back yard. This year it rained the whole weekend so a rock picture would have been rather wet. Always willing to shake things up, this year we stayed inside and used my mothers living room.

Christmas

This year we had Christmas at my mothers house. Christmas doesn't make much sense to an eight month old so we tried to keep the shock and awe to a somewhat reasonable level. Of course she loved the packaging and paper way more than what they contained. (It takes Nara a while to warm to new toys).

Lillet Buttermilk Shakes

A lot of things were banished to the basement in our recent move. The basement is expansive, and the general rule of thumb was this: if we weren't going to need it in the following three weeks, use a big, fat, Sharpie to indicate basement/sotano on the cardboard box. Straight to the basement. One perplexing item that ended up in the kitchen was a milkshake maker. After living in the garage for years, it seemed like the sort of thing that would go to the basement without much of a discussion. But apparently not. Wayne wanted to put it to use, so it has been hanging out, in my line of sight, for weeks. Correspondingly, the idea for this shake popped into my head. Tiny, thick vanilla buttermilk shakes spiked with Lillet.

Lillet Buttermilk Shakes

Buttermilk shakes are my favorite. But I like them small - more of a big shot than anything else. These turned out nicely in part because the Lillet brings a subtle booziness and fragrant citrus flavors to the creamy slush. I suspect a lot of you have herb gardens with basil plants that are sprouting pretty flowers right now - I picked a few from my planter, and sprinkled them on top of each shake.

Lillet Buttermilk Shakes

Let me know if you have other things you like to do with Lillet. I mention a few basic ideas down below in the head notes, but I'd love to know if any of you do anything super interesting with it. It's a favorite around here for sure. But typically just on the rocks or with a splash of sparkling water.

Open Question: Best camping in Northern Arkansas or Southern Missouri?

My wife and I have been camping in Arkansas a few times, but all the campgrounds we've been to have no privacy what so ever. They have been large open fields where you're only 30 feet from the next people. We would rather be at a camp site that is more secluded. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sesame Yogurt Pasta Salad

Hi everyone, it's going to be a quick post today. I wanted to share this pasta salad with you. It's the sort of off-beat thing I'd argue is worth a minute or two of your time. It made a stand-up lunch - filling, plenty of vegetables, and so on. Also, the flavors in the turmeric-tinted sauce are brilliantly unexpected - garlic, tahini, yogurt, cumin, cayenne, and coriander. Sealing the deal? The fact that you can prep everything a day or two ahead of time, making it easy to throw the whole thing together on whatever timeline you fancy. This quirky combination of ingredients is one of the reasons I still love cooking and finding inspiration from other cooks - their cookbooks, websites, articles.

Sesame Yogurt Pasta Salad Recipe

In this case I have Peter Berley to thank. I pulled his book from the shelf and tweaked one of the pasta salads ever so slightly. In this version you toss stuffed pasta and a medley of in-season vegetables with the (previously mentioned) spiced sesame yogurt sauce. It's oh so perfect for summer. One of those all-in-one meals that work beautifully with all the brightly colored vegetables available this time of year. Serve it at room temperature, or just slightly chilled. Too cold, and textures change, pasta hardens, and the flavors shut down.
