Open Question: Know of any good campsites in Oregon?

When I was a kid, my parents would drive down the highway, turn off on a side road then find a dirt road and drive until they found an area big enough for us to set up a tent and a camp fire. Now I realize you cant really do that nowadays, but there has to be something besides the campgrounds with dozens of tent pads lined up in a loop so that you can see/hear the next person over and watch all the cars driving in and out...

We are looking for some place where we can have a tent and a fire, we don't need running water or bathrooms, we dont want to be very near to other campers and we dont want to have to reserve the place 9 months in advance. Does anyone know of a place like that?
We are good campers, we pack out what we pack in, and we believe in enjoying the wilderness while you are there, not trying to take it home with you. We live in Salem, so we would like to stay within about a 3 hour drive.
